TikTok Is Addictive, But Its UX Isn’t

TikTok has rapidly become one of the most engaging social media platforms, evolving beyond just short-form videos into a space for communication, discovery, and collaboration. But let’s be real—while TikTok keeps us scrolling for hours, some parts of its user experience still feel... underdeveloped.

As a UX designer (and a daily TikTok scroller myself), I wanted to explore how TikTok could be improved to create a smoother, more intuitive experience. Based on competitive analysis, user observations, and a survey with 23 TikTok users, I identified three key areas that needed some serious UX love:

Based on competitive analysis, user observations, and a survey with 23 TikTok users, I identified three key areas that needed some serious UX love:

  • The Cluttered Inbox – Messages, notifications, TikTok Shop updates, and system alerts are all mixed together, making it hard to find important messages.

  • Underdeveloped Saved Videos – Users can save videos and create collections, but many don’t know or care about this feature.

  • The Hidden Clear Display Feature – A great feature that removes UI distractions, but so hidden that most users don’t even know it exists (including me, until recently 😬).

Let’s break down these problems and see how we can enhance them!

PROBLEM 01

The Inbox Problem: Notification Dump?

Imagine opening TikTok’s inbox to check a message—except, instead of a chat, you’re met with a chaotic mess of notifications, mentions, TikTok's system notification, TikTok Shop messages, and suggested accounts.

Many users find TikTok’s inbox somewhat organized but still in need of improvement. However, a significant number feel it’s too cluttered due to all notifications being in one place, making messaging less efficient.

This highlights the need for better organization and separation of notification types.

Since TikTok is a short-form content platform, applying the fade-out and tap-to-show UI method is not ideal. Unlike streaming platforms, where users passively watch longer content, TikTok’s fast-paced nature requires quick interactions.

Additionally, TikTok's portrait format is a core part of its experience, meaning a landscape-based full screen approach (like YouTube) is not applicable.

Based on competitive analysis, a visible button for quick access is the most effective solution to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience.
